Credit card fraud is actually a type of financial fraud and can also be classified as identity theft.  Scammers are becoming increasingly ingenious with their scams every year.  Dumpster diving is a common activity whereby criminals actually rummage through the garbage of victim’s searching for pre-approved credit cards applications.  Without the victm’s knowledge criminals apply for credit cards in their victim’s name.  Mail theft is another common occurance where criminals steal your mail and then apply to your bank for a credit card in your name.

You can prevent this five ways:

1. Get a paper shredder and then shred documents containing your bank account numbers and credit card numbers.

2. Buy a locking mailbox to protect your mail.

3. Under no circumstances put your payments as outbound mail (with the red flag flipped up) on your mailbox, this not only alerts the letter carrier for outgoing mail but thieves also.

4. If  feasible, apply for credit cards or bank cards which show your picture on them.  It is getting to be more popular for credit card companies to add this as a security feature.

5. You shouldn’t allow anyone to take your Visa, Master Card, American Express or bank debit card out of your view. In cases where you eat in a restaurant never allow the waiter take your credit card.  The time it takes for you to go and personally pay the cashier can save you from expensive and difficult credit score problems.

These ideas are only some of the various ways to prevent credit card fraud from happening.  They may not be perfect nevertheless they lower the potential for its occurrence. Take charge and be responsible for your credit cards. In the end, plastic money together with your identity, just like cash, may be stolen too.
